ANDREW MAXWELL

Renowned for his cutting edge comedy and intrepid social commentary, double Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee (2007 & 2011) and star of Sky’s JOHN BISHOP’S ONLY JOKING and BBC’s LIVE AT THE APOLLO, host of the BBC3 EDINBURGH COMEDY MARATHON & series regular on Sky’s WALL OF FAME, Andrew Maxwell is always a must-see for any comedy fan.

Always adept at making shrewd, balanced and very funny political observations, Maxwell was one of the first comics at the 2011 Edinburgh Festival to react to the riots in England and the Arab Spring and evolve his act accordingly to rave reviews and a nomination. He has just finished performing his exciting new 2012 Edinburgh show THAT’S THE SPIRIT at the Assembly Rooms George Square to sell out audiences. He followed this with a run at London’s Soho Theatre. He also performed at the Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival (incl. a performance at the televised American Dream gala) just before he headed to Edinburgh in the summer.

Andrew has appeared on recent series of BBC’s HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU, ITV2’S CELEBRITY JUICE, the Dave Channel’s ARGUMENTAL, BBC2’s MOCK THE WEEK and R4’s THE NOW SHOW cementing his reputation as one of the country’s most sought after comedians.

Andrew has won and been nominated for several other major awards including the Time Out Live Award for Best Stand-up, the Loaded Magazine Award for Best Stand-up and the Chortle Award for Best Contribution To The Live Comedy Circuit. He was also voted Best Irish Comedian by the public at the Entertainment.ie Awards

ANDREA HUBERT

Andrea Hubert started out on the comedy circuit in late 2009, and within 20 gigs gained second place in a national competition. She’s since performed alongside some of the UK’s best comedians at prestigious comedy clubs all over the UK, been commissioned as a writer for a BBC pilot and was shortlisted for the BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Forum at the New York Television Festival 2012.  She was dubbed One to Watch in 2012 by London is Funny, for whom she went on to write a comedy poetry blog in 2012.

In 2013, Andrea and her writing partner Ryan Cull won the prestigious BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Forumcompetition, beating over 500 other entrants. The writing pair are currently working on a new sitcom as part of a development deal with Objective Productions (makers of Peep Show and Fresh Meat.) She is also producing a book of short plays, and continues to contribute regular interviews and features to The Guardian.

In 2015, Andrea took part in a spoof music video of Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood, parodying the notion of tax on female toiletries. Click here to watch the full video.

LAURENCE CLARKE

Laurence Clark is an internationally-acclaimed comedian, writer and actor who has cerebral palsy.  His observational, political stand-up and filmed stunts demonstrate the endearing naivety and ridiculousness of human behaviour by seeing the world through his eyes with humour and warmth.
He’s performed everywhere from the House of Commons to a double-decker bus in Sheffield.  With television appearances on BBC, ITV and Channel 4, Laurence was the subject of the BBC1 documentary “We Won’t Drop the Baby” and has been a presenter for BBC Newsnight.  He was awarded Shortlist magazine’s Funniest New Comedian and has been a finalist in the AmusedMoose Edinburgh Comedy Awards.  He has blogged for BBC Ouch, The Independent and The Guardian and regularly performs with the comedy collective Abnormally Funny People.
On stage he has recently toured Scotland in Birds of Paradise’s highly acclaimed dance theatre production Purposeless Movements.  He has also performed in The Trouble with Richard (Graeae) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Octagon Theatre), about which the Guardian said “his wheelchair-assisted Wall is indeed ‘the wittiest partition that I ever heard discourse.”
His 8 critically-acclaimed solo shows at the Edinburgh Fringe have gained him 29 4-star and 3 5-star reviews. His first show, The All-Star Charity Show sent up old-fashioned telethons for disabled people by presenting appeals on behalf of the celebrities who fronted them in the same patronising, overly sentimental way.  In The Jim Davidson Guide to Equality Laurence responded to ‘comic’ Jim Davidson cancelling a show because wheelchair users
were in his audience by doing a show which he vowed to cancel if Jim turned up! Continuing his one-man vendetta against people called Jim, in Jim Fixed It for Me Laurence tried to come to terms with having appeared on Jim’ll Fix It as a child and not getting a Jim’ll Fix It portrayed as disabled in order to make them seem sinister and evil; e.g, Richard III, Long John Silver, Captain Hook, Dr Strangelove, various Bond baddies and of course… Heather Mills-McCartney!  Laurence’s most controversial show,

Spastic Fantastic followed his attempts to reclaim ‘spastic’ as someone with cerebral palsy through stand-up comedy and hidden camera stunts.  Health Hazard was about his one-man mission to help Obama sell the benefits of free healthcare to the American people.  In Inspired, commissioned by the London 2012 Unlimited programme, he tackled his pet hate of disabled people person being called inspirational for doing mundane, everyday shit and staged an unconventional Olympic race.  Finally in Moments of Instant Regret he revisited his shameful deeds of the past, such as making a waiter cry  and biting a policeman, and tried to make amends.

“This is heavy hitting, clever stuff. Not very much stand-up these days has the power to shock, to force a sharp intake of breath and to change minds. This does. Not since Robert Newman have I seen a comic who made me think so much and realise I knew so little. Go. Think. Laugh.” Kate Copstick, The Scotsman

“Laurence Clark has attitude in spades. He’s a searing political satirist who ensures both his message and his jokes are on an equal footing – never lecturing and never being less than funny. He’s such an astute, piercing and funny commentator that disability becomes a side issue. His material is never earnest, nor whinging, nor hectoring – just damn funny comedy from the heart.” Steve Bennett, Chortle

“…irreverent, pertinent and that rarest of things – a humorous hour that leaves you looking at the world in a different light.” Bruce Dessau, Evening Standard

“At the end of a Laurence Clark performance, apart from being a bit tired from laughing, one has come to understand some of the travails of his world – and one has become very fond of the man himself. ” Adelaide Advertiser

“Natural wit” Daily Express

“An engaging clown” The Sunday Times

Sindhu Vee

NATYs 2017 runner-up & Leicester Mercury New Comedian of the Year 2017 Runner-up

BBC New Comedy Award 2016 finalist

Born and brought up in India, with degrees from Delhi University, Oxford University, the University of Chicago, half a PHD, a successful career in investment banking, three kids and a bizarrely gigantic Labrador, Sindhu Vee decided it was time to make her parents proud and start a career in comedy.

Sindhu performed her first ever gig in 2012 at the Funny Women Award’s heats – making it to the semi-finals and then a year later, the finals. With nerves of steel and some might say a slight competitive streak, Sindhu has also competed at the 2013 Amused Moose Comedy Awards (quarter finalist), in 2016 she was a finalist in the Comedy Knights Fresh Comedian of the Year competition and the BBC New Comedy Awards and has recently been nominated in the 2017 Leicester New Comedian of the Year awards, with the winner to be announced this February.

Following her hugely successful beginnings, it’s been a swift rise for Sindhu with invitations flying in to perform worldwide, from the US to India – where in 2014, Sindhu performed to sold out audiences in Delhi and featured in a television special, Rising Stars of Comedy on India’s premier English channel, NDTV. Most recently she was invited to join 5 Indian comics at Coimbatore’s Laughathon 2015 and was named in Shaadi-Etiyaadi’s (an Indian blog) among the top 18 comics in India.

Back on UK soil, Sindhu is already a firm favourite on the comedy circuit securing gigs across the country including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016) and two sell-out nights at London’s coveted Museum of Comedy with her solo show The Girl From Sindhustan.

Alongside stand-up Sindhu has a flourishing television & radio career, having performed live for the BBC Asian Network’s Big Comedy Night at the Watford Palace Theatre, BBC’s Asian Network Comedy Night at the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and a support slot for Live From The BBC for BBC Worldwide. On radio Sindhu has appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour 70th Birthday Party and It’s a Funny World for BBC Scotland. She is also the voice of ‘Auntie G’ on Preeya Kalidas’ weekly show, Kupid Kalidas for BBC Asian Network.

Most recently Sindhu appeared on Alan Davies As Yet Untitled for Channel Dave and currently has a number of projects in development including her newest solo show, Iguana Mum, set to debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August.

Tez Ilyas

BBC NEW TALENT HOT LIST 2017

CHORTLE BREAKTHROUGH ACT OF THE YEAR 2017, NOMINEE

Tez Ilyas’s political stand-up is candyfloss with a razorblade inside: sweet and familiar at first, then shockingly, painfully sharp. It’s the kind of manoeuvre that takes serious talent to pull off.
★★★★ | The Telegraph

Ilyas has a slickness more reminiscent of US comics, and the gags to back it up, though his most prized asset could yet be his bold, subversive streak.
★★★★ | Guardian

Radiantly entertaining.
★★★★ | The Times

Tez Ilyas hit the ground running, finding himself in no less than eight competition finals including the prestigious BBC New Comedy Award and Leicester Mercury New Comedian of the Year in his first few years.

In 2015, he achieved phenomenal success with his debut stand up show TEZ Talks. After wowing audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a sell-out run at the Soho Theatre and his own BBC Radio 4 series followed, with a second series coming out early 2018.

In 2016, his highly anticipated follow up show Made in Britain went on to sell-out every single performance (including extra shows) at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and gained spectacular critical acclaim, followed by a smash hit nationwide tour in 2017.

His third solo show, Teztify, once again delivered a spectacularly powerful, provocative and brilliantly funny hour of topical stand up, wowing packed out audience’s night after night at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Tez has appeared on The Last Leg (C4), Mock the Week (BBC Two), Live From the BBC (BBC Two), Man Like Mobeen (BBC Three), Stand Up Central (Comedy Central), Kevin Hart’s Live from Montreal (LOL Network), Virtually Famous (E4), The Now Show (BBC Radio 4) and piloted a brand new quiz show for Vice.

He has also written and starred in his own scripted comedy shorts for BBC Three (The Go Home Office), BBC iPlayer (The Fast and the Fool) and Sky Arts (Tez Ilyas’ Christmas).

Saturday 26th August : Paul Tonkinson | Susan Murray | Dave Fulton | Edd Daggers

“HILARIOUS; NOBODY MAKES ME LAUGH LIKE PAUL TONKINSON. SIMPLY ONE OF THE GREATEST COMICS AROUND. GO SEE HIM!” Michael McIntyre

A sensational live performer, Yorkshire man, marathon runner and former (double award-winning) Time Out Comedian of the Year, Paul Tonkinson has long upheld his esteemed reputation as one of the finest stand-ups the UK has to offer. With a unique and distinctive style, Tonkinson is noted for his effervescent physicality and skillful impressions, which bring alive exuberant, tender comic reflections on love, family and the day-to-day idiosyncrasies of 21st century living. A plethora of first class material, combined with tremendous charm and irrepressible, infectious energy make for quite a formidable talent.

After many years of storming the circuit, and much badgering from fellow professionals, he took to the road in 2012 with his eagerly anticipated debut tour: Paul Tonkinson; Fancy Man. The tour took in 50 dates across the UK, and gave audiences the opportunity to experience the full Tonkinson phenomena in all it’s glory.

Following his solo tour, he was given the opportunity to play to a wider audience, joining the mighty Michael McIntyre as a special guest on live shows around the UK. In 2013 he had the honour of joining Michael as a special guest on his global arena tour; playing to millions across the globe, as far and wide as Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong.   Paul joined Michael again in 2015 as special guest on the Happy & Glorious Tour; playing to sold-out crowds in arenas across the UK.

On TV, he’s most recently performed on BBC One’s Michael Mcintyre’s Comedy Roadshow and Comedy Central’s The Comedy Store and The World Stands-up. He was recently a contestant on Ch. 4`s hit show Celebrity Come Dine With Me, proving he’s not just a dazzling stand-up talent, but a whizz in the kitchen, scooping first place to win the cash prize for charity. Back in the day, when he was a mere whippersnapper he had a stint presenting Ch. 4’s The Big Breakfast and he has also presented radio shows on XFM in London and Manchester. He has just completed a stint as a Programme Associate on BBC One’s Michael Mcintyre Chat Show.

His first love remains stand-up, and Tonkinson remains in great demand in the UK and across the globe, performing at all the major international comedy festivals including the prestigious Montreal Just For Laughs festival where he hosted the esteemed Britcom Gala. Confirming his status as an invincible and highly versatile performer, he is also a regular entertainer for the UK Armed Forces, and has performed in Afghanistan and Iraq; playing to 2,500 troops in 45 degree heat in the middle of the desert.

AT HIS BEST, HE REDUCES A MARITAL ARGUMENT TO MEANINGLESS SOUNDS, PROMPTING LOTS OF CHUCKLES OF DOMESTIC RECOGNITION” Chortle

Dave Fulton

Dave Fulton has a deceptively laid back stage manner that disguises a raw aggression. This is unmissable comedy from one of the most dynamic and innovative comedians on the comedy circuit. His mother would never have thought it possible from someone who holds a Masters in Music Composition.

You’ll have spotted Dave on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Steve Coogan’s Saxondale, the BBC series The Stand-up Show, and 5′s The Comedy Store series where he took the roof off the prestigious club with his highly inventive perspective on life. He’s also presented a feature for Newsnight on American culture.

“John Moloney is one of the most creative and professional comedians I have had the pleasure to work with – quick off the mark – John will have had the audience laughing three times in the time that it takes any other comedian to say ‘hello’…

…The comedy scene would be a poorer place without him.

John is a firm favourite of the Comedy Store – and a firm favourite of mine”

Don Ward – The Comedy Store

John Moloney has been a professional comedian for over twenty-five years, and has entertained audiences across the globe with his crafted, intelligent and original stand-up routines.

Winner of the Best Live Performer award for two years running at the London Comedy Festival, John has become one of Britain’s most in-demand comedians.

John was also delighted to be nominated as ‘Best Live Stand-Up’ at the British Comedy Awards – but was even happier to be the WINNER in the Category “Outstanding Contribution to UK Comedy” in 2015.

John’s Radio 4 Show ” The John Moloney Show ” was Pick of the Year on the BBC in 2016, and has been re-commissioned in 2017.

John is highly sought-after on the Corporate Circuit, and has developed a relationship with many blue-chip clients, who use his services at their events and conferences year after year.

Andy Askins

AS SEEN ON THE JOHN BISHOP SHOW – BBC ONE

“DARK HUMOUR WITH FAULTLESS TIMING” The Stage

Andy Askins is a diminutive figure who exudes an air of vulnerability as he steps up to the microphone armed with a guitar and a cheeky grin. It’s an overwhelmingly misleading demeanour which serves to heighten the impact of the killer lines that he delivers.

Andy has an expertly crafted routine littered with an eclectic mix of offbeat original comic songs and parodies. A talented musician with a captivating voice, popular songs have been re-written and given a perverse twist to tremendous comic effect. With a wickedly dry sense of humour, Andy’s darker material is sweetened by his innocent and impish demeanour which never fails to leave audiences in the palm of his hand. With impeccable timing, the inventive and quirky songs are peppered with inspired patter – the material is as strong as the songs and delivered in an inimitable modest and self-deprecating style.

Since becoming a full time comedian back in 2005, Andy has built a reputation as a distinctive and original talent, and is now a highly sought-after headliner at all the major UK comedy clubs, as well as being a favourite amongst his peers.  Following a successful debut in 2014, Andy was invited back to the prestigious Altitude Comedy Festival in Austria the following year, where he once again tore the roof off. He has previously had the honour of working with Michael McIntyre, Lee Evans, Jason Manford, Alan Carr, Jimmy Carr, Micky Flanagan, Harry Hill, Rhod Gilbert, Bill Bailey and Jack Dee, to name a few stand-up luminaries. Andy performed his solo show “The Man With No Name” at the prestigious Edinburgh Festival for the first time in 2016 to rave reviews.

On TV screens, Andy was recently invited to appear on The John Bishop Show, performing a storming set at the Hackney Empire, alongside a stellar line-up from the worlds of comedy and music. The show transmitted in a primetime Saturday night slot on BBC One. Having impressed audiences and executives alike, Andy has then invited back to perform on this year’s John Bishop Christmas Show  (the only Artiste to be invited back from the series).  The festive edition of the show also aired on BBC One.  Andy has also recorded a set for the latest series of Comedy Central’s The Comedy Store, and has performed on two series of The World Stands Up, also for Comedy Central.

Proving that his brand of comedy is universally appealing, Andy has delighted comedy audiences as far and wide as Switzerland, Belgium, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Bangkok, Dubai, Mumbai and the Caribbean. He is also a firm favourite with the Armed Forces, performing several tours on Naval ships in ports around the world, as well as Iraq, Afghanistan and the Falkland Islands. Andy was also one of a very select group to be awarded the Afghanistan campaign medal  for his contributions which included several tours to soldiers operating on the frontline.

Originally from the North East of England, Andy is now based on the Isle of Wight.  He is currently working on several original ideas for TV and Radio.

“ALTHOUGH HE LOOKS MILD-MANNERED AND STUDIOUS, HE ACTUALLY PACKS A WRY, CHEEKY WIT. THERE IS, MOST DEFINITELY, SOMETHING WARMLY ALLURING ABOUT HIM. HIS WINNING PERSONA GOES A LONG WAY.” www.chortle.co.uk

Saturday 17 June : Alun Cochrane Ian Stone Patrick Monahan

Counting down to the Balham Comedy Festival this Saturday with a stunning lineup !

Alun Cochrane is a no-nonsense comedian who specialises in funny nonsense. Much of his comedy begins simply as something he’s seen, heard or felt in his own life, or in the street, or the kitchen, or anywhere and from that it blossoms into a highly amusing anecdote or a strange flight of fancy.
He has recently joined Frank Skinner’s Absolute Radio Show and can be heard every Saturday morning from 8am.
Alun has several television appearances to his name, most recently Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow he’s also often seen on Eight out of ten cats, Mock The Week, and has appeared on Soccer A.M and Live At The Comedy Store.
Radio producers are also aware of Cochrane’s talent and he’s notched up various credits from Just A Minute, 4 Stands Up, and The Now Show to Clive Anderson’s Chat Room.
At the Edinburgh festival he’s performed 6 original solo stand-up shows in the last 7 years to critical and audience acclaim.
Alun has a number of corporate entertainment clients who appreciate the ability to tailor his act to a specific group whilst still being extremely amusing and original- he owns several suits (at least 4) and now he has a child is particularly happy to wear one of them for work of this nature. Perhaps less pleasing to him is discovering he is good at work in this sector just as an enormous economic downturn strikes. Hmm.

Ranked amongst the top ten stand-ups in Britain by The Independent, Ian Stone is one of the most talented topical acts and comperes in the country. Edgy and provocative, with an easy-going manner and self-depreciating style, Ian is at great ease bantering with an audience. He’s a member of the Comedy Store’s critically acclaimed ‘Cutting Edge’ team. Ian also received a nomination in 2012 for the BEST SHOW at the Leicester Comedy Festival Awards.
He has performed all over the world including Comedy Festivals in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, South Africa, Holland, France, Ireland and Germany. He’s entertained the troops in Kuwait, Bosnia,Kosovo, Cyprus and Afghanistan. He was the first British stand-up to perform in Moscow and the first performer to appear for The Comedy Store in Mumbai.

A dazzling array of stand-up legends at the best comedy club in London…

John Moloney

“One of the best things about watching live comedy is seeing a comedian get his second wind of inspiration.  Sometimes an established comic suddenly finds something extra, and one of these comics is John Moloney.  He’s been a headliner at top clubs like the Comedy Store for years – yet his comedy has acquired more depth, as well as an even sharper edge.  “William Cook – The Guardian.

“A deeply enjoyable, hilarious evening relaxing in the sure hands of a total professional.” ***** by John Christopher Wood Click here for a stunning 5 Star Review of John’s new show.

Paul Tonkinson

Back in the day, when he was a mere whippersnapper he had a stint presenting Ch. 4’s The Big Breakfast and he has also presented radio shows on XFM in London and Manchester. Easter weekend and what a lineup !

Ian Stone

Edgy and provocative, with an easy-going manner and self-depreciating style, Ian is at great ease bantering with an audience. He’s a member of the Comedy Store’s critically acclaimed ‘Cutting Edge’ team. Ian also received a nomination in 2012 for the BEST SHOW at the Leicester Comedy Festival Awards.
He has performed all over the world including Comedy Festivals in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, South Africa, Holland, France, Ireland and Germany. Dana Alexander

Originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Dana Alexander started stand-up when she was 18, going on to establish herself as a regular at such clubs as the Yuk Yuk’s chain. Billed as the only black female comic on the Canadian comedy circuit, she voted a ‘best discovery’ by Now Magazine in 2006.

She moved to the UK in 2011, making her Edinburgh Fringe debut that same year. She was then nominated for best club comic in the 2012 Chortle Awards.

Ben Norris

“a cast iron guaranteed headliner” – Londonisfunny.com

“Killer gags” – The Scotsman

“truly a sight to behold” – Ed Byrne

“A wonderful disgrace of a human being” – Daniel Kitson

Recently seen supporting Ed Byrne on his national tour Ben’s TV credits include “Never Mind The Buzzcocks”, “They Think It’s All Over” and “Mock The Week”.

“The term circuit legend is overused, but Norris is one of a handful that have been headlining for more than two decades and rarely departs a stage without leaving it torn to shreds in his wake. A master of the craft, this will be an hour of the most polished stand-up you are likely to see.”
GQ Magazine

“Ben Norris may not be a household name, but then very few really good comedians are these days. He has been touring steadily for the past two decades, and he’s developed a razor sharp act in the process; it’s hard to think of anyone on the circuit who works an audience with as much as much skill and flair.”
The Scotsman

This weekend at Banana Cabaret

This weekend features a terrific lineup of comedy standup, including Imran Yusuf, Allyson June Smith, Andrew Bird & Simon Bligh.

Imran Yusuf

Imran Yusuf is renowned as a skilful raconteur who seamlessly weaves socio-political satire with heartfelt introspection in his charmingly endearing trademark styling. Languid, punchy, cheeky and utterly loveable, Imran has established himself as a truly unique voice in the world of comedy.

Imran is of East-African Indian descent, born in Mombasa, Kenya but raised in London with a brief stint studying illegally in the USA. Imran has travelled much of the world including Israel/Palestine, Jordan and Saudi Arabia during the Lebanon Crisis in 2006 in an all encompassing pilgrimage for which he quit his job and spent his savings.

In 2010, Imran presented his debut solo show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The show, An Audience with Imran Yusuf, was part of the Laughing Horse Free Festival and it was Imran’s intention to develop his craft and material at the Fringe whilst at the same time keeping under the radar of the UK Comedy Industry and Press. However, word about the show got out and within a week Imran had gained the first of a collection of 5 star reviews, which led to him being nominated for Best Newcomer in the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award 2010 (He was the first performer from The Free Festival to be nominated in the history of the Awards). All of this whilst fasting between sunrise and sunset in observation of Ramadan.

Imran’s TV debut was also made shortly after the festival appearing on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow (BBC1) and the Edinburgh Comedy Fest (BBC3) broadcast in September 2010.

Imran has completed two UK tours with his solo shows “An Audience with Imran Yusuf” and “Bring The Thunder”. Imran took his third solo show “Roar of The Underdog” to the Edinburgh Festival in 2014 and is taking its sequel; “Super Roar of The Underdog Turbo X: HD Remix” to the Edinburgh Festival in 2015. Imran can also be seen as a regular member of the team-based topical comedy show; The Cutting Edge at The Comedy Store in London.

Andrew Bird

Andrew hails from Northamptonshire and moved to London to pursue a career in stand-up. He worked in a bar where he practised making the regulars laugh before his career in live comedy took off.

Since then, Andrew has become a top headline act up and down the UK as well as performing around the world from Dublin to Doha. He has also supported Rhod Gilbert and Lee Hurst on tour, and been the warm-up artist for TV shows including Nevermind The Buzzcocks, Room 101 and Pointless. Andrew is also a writer in demand having written for series such as 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Mock The Week.
Andrew’s 2011 and 2012 Edinburgh were sold out and received glowing reviews across the board.

Friday 24th & Saturday 25th March : John Moloney, Jeff Innocent, Steve Gribbin, Andre Vincent & Windsor

After a deliriously funny St Patrick’s weekend, we’ve got a blockbuster of a pair of shows this weekend.

William Cook – The Guardian.

“A deeply enjoyable, hilarious evening relaxing in the sure hands of a total professional.” ***** by John Christopher Wood

John was also delighted to be nominated as ‘Best Live Stand-Up’ at the British Comedy Awards â€“ but was even happier to be the WINNER in the Category “Outstanding Contribution to UK Comedy” in 2015.

John’s Radio 4 Show ” The John Moloney Show ” was Pick of the Year on the BBC in 2016, and has been re-commissioned in 2017.

JEFF INNOCENT

Jeff Innocent is a popular and experienced stand up comedian, actor, writer and cultural commentator. As a stand up comedian he has reached near legendary status among his peers and audience alike by staying at the top of his game for over 15 years. His unique appeal lies in the contrast between his East End ‘Geezer’ appearance and demeanour, and his educated, philosophical delivery and subject matter, inspiring the guardian to describe him as a comedian with, ‘The body of a nightclub bouncer and the brains of a university boffin’.

He continues to cement his position within the premiership of British comedians with his weekly performances at clubs like Jongleurs and The Comedy Store, featuring in the 2013 movie, The Comedy Store, Raw and Uncut. He has also taken one man shows to The Edinburgh Fringe.

The spread of the comedy circuit globally has found Jeff performing in such unlikely and far flung locations as China, India, Norway and Vietnam to name but a few.
His recent acting credits include appearances in the children’s TV programme, Little Howards Big Question and BBC’s extremely popular historical drama series, Call The Midwife.

STEVE GRIBBIN

Steve Gribbin is a diminutive guitar-wielding satirist from Liverpool whose scabrous comedy songs and off the wall observations have made him one of the firm favourites of the comedy circuit.

Steve’s original comedy songs combine razor sharp lyrics with tunes that put their foot in the door of your mind and refuse to leave. Firmly based in rock ‘n’ roll and refusing to pull no punches, these are not the ‘oh so witty’ ditties of penguin-suited plink plonk piano playing posh gobs. They are that rarity – comedy songs which are actually funny.

For nine years Steve was the smaller one in the dynamic comedy duo Skint Video, stalwart’s of the Edinburgh Festival, appearing on countless television programmes such as Saturday Live, radio such as The Mary Whitehouse Experience, and their own show in 1992/3 Songlines (BBC Radio 1). Skint Video went their different ways in 1993, since then Steve has been storming across the UK and Ireland as a solo artiste.

Mick Ferry is renowned as a fine purveyor of lugubrious surrealism and has quickly established himself as one of the most sought after comics on the British and International comedy circuit. He is also a regular member of the prestigious topical Cutting Edge Team at the Comedy Store.

Friday 3rd & Saturday 4th March : Paul Thorne, Andy Askins, Scott Capurso & Quincy

It’s another cracking lineup at Banana Cabaret this weekend.

Paul Thorne is one of Britain’s most established and sought-after stand-ups. As well as performing at all of the UK’s major comedy venues and festivals he can be seen weekly at London’s Comedy Store as a member of The Cutting Edge team of comedians who perform topical material based on the week’s news.

In addition to performing all over Europe Paul has taken his unique brand of comedy as far afield as Hong Kong, Thailand, Canada, Singapore, China and Japan and has toured extensively with Jack Dee, Lee Hurst and Rory Bremner.

Not for the faint-hearted, Scott Capurro’s un-comprising take on his gay lifestyle and white trash background make him as challenging as he is funny. A Perrier Award Winner, he has recently had his first novel published “Fowl Play”, a comedy about murder and date rape, to rave reviews.

Reared in Daly City, California; at age 3, he swam the English Channel. Since 1993, he’s been telling unsavory jokes in every English speaking country. Scott is trusting and thus surrounded by duplicity, yet he continues challenging himself, because he’s physically challenged and emotionally unstable.

Described by San Francisco Weekly as “stand-up in the very best possible sense – deadpan, ever-alert and hilarious”

Scott has appeared in Mrs. Doubtfire, where, effortlessly, he played a homosexual; and Star Wars: Phantom Menace, where, breathlessly, he wore a body stocking.

Scott knows David Cameron (wink, wink) and Nelson Mandela. Well, he’s met Nelson once. They’re both vegetarians.

“The most fearless and technically perfect stand up on the circuit.” – The Guardian

Andy Askins is a diminutive figure who exudes an air of vulnerability as he steps up to the microphone armed with a guitar and a cheeky grin. It’s an overwhelmingly misleading demeanour which serves to heighten the impact of the killer lines that he delivers.

Friday 24th & Saturday 25th February : Carl Donnelly, Addy van der Borgh, Otiz Cannelloni, Nigel Ng & David Ward

Terrific bill of stand-up heavyweights this weekend, at “the friendliest comedy club in the country”, according to the Guardian.

Carl Donnelly

Carl started performing stand-up in 2005 and quickly established himself as one of the UK’s most exciting young comedians. His conversational, silly sense of humour has seen him win a host of awards (Chortle Best Newcomer 2007; Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year 2007; among others) and become a regular at all of the finest comedy clubs in the UK and Ireland.

In 2009, Carl performed his debut solo show Relax Everyone, it’s Carl Donnelly! at the Edinburgh Fringe for which he was nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer. Also nominated for the Fosters Comedy Award in 2013, Carl has since returned to Edinburgh with five further solo shows, his latest being the very well-reviewed Bad Man Tings in 2016.

Recently, Carl has been developing as an international act. This year will see him return to Australia for the Melbourne Comedy Festival, after his own successful tours of Australia and New Zealand in 2013 and 2015. He has performed at the biggest comedy festivals in the world (Montreal Just for Laughs, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Sydney Comedy Festival, Kilkenny Cat Laughs etc).

Carl has also appeared on various TV shows including Mock The WeekDave’s One Night StandStand Up for the WeekRussell Howard’s Good News and Stand Up CentralAlan Davies: As Yet Untitled, Follow The FootballFootball Tonightand Comedy Store. He is also a regular on radio appearing as a guest on such shows as BBC 5live’s The Back End of Next Week, Radio 4’s Loose Ends and Act Your Age as well as being a regular guest on talkSPORT. He has also co-hosted a radio show for the Fubar Radio app after his acclaimed podcast which he recorded with Chris Martin.

“Excellent, fast-rising comic with pacy anecdotal routines”
Sunday Times

“Donnelly has developed a style that is the antithesis of the loud, sweaty, manic comic so prevalent on the telly and live tours at the moment. This is stand up with valium: near horizontal levels of louche that take the mundane stories of everyday life and turns them into stretches of self deprecating silliness”
The Guardian

Addy van der Borgh

Addy van der Borgh has that rare talent of making people laugh as soon as he walks on stage. He is a great performer of highly acclaimed and original material, an ability noticed immediately by the BBC when he appeared on the Stand-up Show on BBC1 after only one year as a comedian. He has subsequently appeared on Live At The Comedy Store for Comedy Central, Live At Jongleurs and The World Stands Up for Sky TV and the BBC3 series from Baby Cow Productions, Brain Candy. He has also written and co-presented twenty episodes of TV Meltdown for Sky 1 with Kirsty Gallacher (2004 / 2005), has acted in a number of voiceovers for radio and television and has appeared on many radio shows including the legendary Loose Ends on Radio 4.

‘An unassuming comic genius’ (Metro)

‘Brilliant natural clown’ (The Daily Telegraph)

‘… van der Borgh can reel off cracking gags and compete with the best freestylers such as Ross Noble’ (Evening Standard)

‘An excellent stand-up with intelligence and wit’ (The Guardian)

Friday 17th and Saturday 18th Feb : Simon Evans, Andrew Maxwell, Kerry Godliman, Larry Dean & Johnny Candon

It’s a blockbuster show this weekend, featuring an astonishing bill, all of whom are headliners in their own right.

Simon Evans

Hugely popular both in comedy clubs and on the after-dinner and corporate circuit, Evans excels in routines that are adult in the best sense of the word, prompting reviewers to describe him as demonically dry Dominic Maxwell, Metro and sublime William Cook, The Guardian.

Evans is well respected by his peers. He’s the writer of choice for Dara O Briain, Sean Lock, Jimmy Carr, Marcus Brigstocke and Lee Mack among others. He is a familiar voice on BBC Radio 4 as a regular on The News QuizThe Unbelievable Truth and Armando Iannucci’s Charm Offensive. Evans has anchored and written seven series of the news satire The Way It Is. He’s also laboured bravely in the face of ultimately overwhelming opposition as part of the Comedians’ team on University Challenge – The Professionals.

As well as the usual comedy clubs and festivals, Evans has focused on making in-roads into the sports and fundraising after-dinner speaking circuit and corporate events. He performs regularly for organisations such as the Variety Club and the Lord’s Taverners and bookers such as JLA, David Trick and Roger de Courcey. His style of comedy, his ability to perform an entirely clean set without compromising on the laughs (but also to ‘strengthe’’ the language when appropriate, without descending into vulgarity) and his relative maturity and reference points have made him a great hit with audiences perhaps tired of hearing the same old jokes from some of the more mainstream comedians.

Notwithstanding the stand up comedy shows (too numerous to detail), a pre-comedy appearance on The Krypton Factor (1994), commercials for Strongbow cider and losing on University Challenge (2007), you could say Simon’s done quite a bit on TV and radio.

This Autumn, Andrew filmed his first ONE NIGHT STAND for the Dave Channel (ably supported by Chris Ramsay and Benny Boot) which will air on Weds 12thDecember. He will also soon be seen on Sky Atlantic’s DON’T SIT IN THE FRONT ROW, which is hosted by Jack Dee, and MONUMENTAL, a new BBC NI series hosted by Adam Hills which will start airing in the New Year.

Later this year, Andrew will again be seen on Sky Atlantic in their new and exciting comedy series, Edinburgh smash hit SET LIST. He appears in one of the UK episodes and also performed at a special from Los Angeles which was hosted by Matt Kirshen. Other comedy talent involved in the series include Robin Williams, Roseanne, Drew Carey, Ross Noble, Hannibal Burress and Greg Proops and it will air from the Autumn.

In the next month, Andrew will also record appearances on Dave’s ALEXANDER ARMSTRONG’S BIG ASK and also Radio 4’s IT’S NOT WHAT YOU KNOW

Andrew also appeared in Sky Atlantic’s first original comedy series, MORGAN SPURLOCK’S NEW BRITANNIA, alongside Shappi Khorsandi and Ruby Wax, which aired earlier this year. He had a four part Radio 4 series ANDREW MAXWELL’S PUBLIC ENEMIES commissioned in 2012 with producer Sam Bryant which will be recorded in 2013.

Last September, Andrew presented an authored documentary for BBC3, CONSPIRACY COACH TRIP: 9/11 (with Renegade Pictures) which aired around the 10 year anniversary of the events: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b014gpjx. A new three part CONSPIRACY ROAD TRIP series began airing on BBC3 on Monday 1st October with the first episode focusing on the 7/7 Bombings and the second on Creationism. The third episode TX’s on Monday 15thOctober and the subject matter of  UFOs has already attracted some attention.

Friday 10 & Saturday 11 February : Dave Fulton, Ben Norris, James Dowdswell & Ola

Sell out shows again last week, so please do book early for a weekend of outstanding comedy at Banana Cabaret (look out for our 20% off Tuesdays on Facebook & Twitter !)

“Whoever it was who decided that Americans don’t have any sense of irony, they forgot to tell Dave Fulton” – The Guide

Ben Norris

“a cast iron guaranteed headliner” – Londonisfunny.com “Killer gags” – The Scotsman

“truly a sight to behold” – Ed Byrne “A wonderful disgrace of a human being” – Daniel Kitson

Recently seen supporting Ed Byrne on his national tour Ben’s TV credits include “Never Mind The Buzzcocks”, “They Think It’s All Over” and “Mock The Week”.

Other interesting facts about Ben: he’s the cousin of actor Martin Freeman and also the father of triplets (2 girls and a boy)

“The term circuit legend is overused, but Norris is one of a handful that have been headlining for more than two decades and rarely departs a stage without leaving it torn to shreds in his wake. A master of the craft, this will be an hour of the most polished stand-up you are likely to see.”
GQ Magazine

James Dowdeswell

James is an imaginative storytelling comedian who combines deft stand-up with daft stories. He is a headline act at most top UK comedy clubs. His comedy has travelled as far as Shanghai, Dubai, Doha, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Phuket, Bali, France, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Australia and Singapore.

This year Dowdeswell has appeared on Russell Howard’s Good News (BBC), Celebrity Deal Or No Deal (Channel 4) and Olympics Greatest Moments (BBC). He also played The Count in Ricky Gervais’ Extras. He is currently filming in his own comedy show about wine called “James Dowdeswell – Black Belt In Wine.”

Ola

Just in his twenties, Ola has already appeared on Comedy Central, London Live, ITV4and MTV Base and written for BBCR4’s The Now ShowThe News Quiz and Nathan Caton’s Can’t Tell Me Nothing. He performs all over the UK and as far afield as the European Continent and Dubai. Young, driven and hugely talented, Ola is a stand-up comedian, writer and actor with natural originality and enviable stage presence.

Finalist in the FHM Search for A Stand Up Hero, broadcast on ITV4, Ola is renowned for his intelligent, edgy humour. As a core cast member and writer of the “Sniggers With Attitude” pilot, for London Live, Ola has displayed a talent for sketch comedy as well as stand-up comedy on The Comedy Store on Comedy Central.

This Weekend at Banana Cabaret : Roger Monkhouse, Ian Moore, Simon Clayton & Chris Kent

We’re delighted to have Roger Monkhouse back at Banana Cabaret this weekend, alongside a stellar lineup that includes Ian Moore, Simon Clayton & Chris Kent

Roger Monkhouse is one of the most original and distinctive acts on the comedy scene. A consummate stand-up who employs a deadly combination of charm and menace to exert a masterful control over any audience. A highly original and quirky performer, Roger’s trademark stage-prowling style and curious, inimitable manner have established him as one of the most sought-after names on the comedy circuit.

Distinguished as a comic by his eloquence and keen eye for a fine phrase, Roger’s easy observational style is spiked by the signal flares of an accomplished gag writer. A supremely confident compere and seasoned corporate host, Roger is happy to improvise freely with a crowd and is at great ease bantering with an audience, but has no shortage of first class observational material in his armory.

As one of the most accomplished acts on the comedy circuit, Roger headlines at all the major comedy venues and has performed extensively throughout the UK and internationally, playing in all corners of the globe from Europe to The Middle East, South Africa, China, Singapore, Tokyo any many places in between. A fine topical writer and performer, and master of sharp observational comedy, Roger is a regular member of the prestigious and critically acclaimed ‘Cutting Edge’ team at the London Comedy Store. His forte is delivering intelligent, thought provoking material that pulls no punches and is always incisive, relevant and up to date.

Recent television credits include ‘The Comedy Store’ and ‘The World Stands Up’, (both Comedy Central), ‘My God I’m My Dad’ (Bravo) and ‘Street Cred Sudoku’ (UKG2). As a writer, he has contributed to Channel 4’s hit show‘8 Out of 10 Cats’, scripting up-to-the-minute topical gags for the weekly panel show. On the airwaves, he has been a guest panelist on comedy panel show ‘Jest A Minute’ (BBC Radio Wales) and has contributed to review show ‘Serious About Comedy’ (BBC7). He has also recently performed on an episode of The Comedy Store’s Raw & Uncut series; hosting a stand-up show in connection with Sony Pictures, which was released in cinemas across the UK in 2012.

“LIKE A SMILY GRIM REAPER, ROGER DOES OBSERVATIONAL MATERIAL WITH MORE AUTHORITY THAN MOST BECAUSE IT’S SO DAMN WELL WRITTEN. AS AN MC EFFORTLESS, LIKE A WORLD-WEARY TEACHER WHO’S ABANDONED THE SYLLABUS TO HAVE A LAUGH WITH THE WHOLE CLASS, WHILE RETAINING THE TOXIC CAPABILITY OF DEALING WITH ANYONE WHO STEPS OUT OF LINE” Time Out

“PACKS IN MORE OBSERVATIONS ON THE HUMAN CONDITION IN A TWENTY MINUTE SET THAN A WHOLE LECTURE ON JEAN – PAUL SARTRE” Venue Magazine

“HIGHLY REGARDED BY HIS PEERS ON THE CIRCUIT – HE’S SHAVEN – HEADED, TOPICAL, GOOD, AND NOTHING TO DO WITH BOB” Evening Standard

Outstanding Comedy This weekend : Carl Donnelly | Mike Gunn | Tom Lucy | Jack Berry | Tania Edwards | Ed Gamble

Terrific lineup of stand-out stand-ups this weekend down at Banana Cabaret !

Nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Award twice, Carl Donnelly has appeared on a selection of TV shows (Mock The Week, Russell Howard’s Good News etc) and travelled the world having performed at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, The Melbourne International Comedy Festival, The New Zealand Comedy Festival and pretty much every other comedy festival there is. A triumph, and unmissable this weekend.

Mike Gunn’s history is as interesting and entertaining as his comedy. A misspent youth and a series of grim jobs cultivated his cynical outlook on life and a perverse desire led him to the world of stand-up. A self-confessed pessimist, he describes himself as “not a natural choice for a career in laughter”. He has a rare ability to walk close to the line of what audiences find acceptable and yet still remain likable and funny. His reputation for being a bit unfriendly, a touch dark and even morose is really not true. In real life he’s loving, warm and philanthropic. Just a bit misunderstood.

Early in his career Mike was supporting the likes of Jo Brand and Alan Davies and recently supported Lee Mack on his huge UK tour. He now headlines at all the top comedy venues in the UK and is rapidly reaching cult status on the circuit. He has performed internationally, taking his talent to Hong Kong, Ireland, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Saudi Arabia and to Australia at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, where he completed a five-week sell-out season. He also had the dubious honour of being the first comic to ever play in Kuantan, East Malaysia and has entertained the troops in the Falkland Islands. Mike has also taken two solo shows to the Edinburgh Festival. His first performance saw him adopt the character of a funeral director in his show ‘Good Grief’ for which he received rave reviews. His follow up show at the festival was the provocative show: “Uncut”. A departure from straight stand-up, this took a comedic look at drug addiction and recovery. In 2012 Mike and his touring partner Sean Collins completed a 35 date sell out UK tour.

Television appearances include Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow (BBC1), Celebrity Deal or no Deal (CH 4), Harry Hill’s TV Burp (ITV), Al Murray’s sit-com ‘Time Gentlemen Please’ (Sky), Soccer AM (Sky 1), The Comedy Store (Comedy Central), Live At Jongleurs (CH5), and The Gas (CH4). He is a regular on the Sky Poker channel. He has also been a contributor for The Guardian. He has written for Time Out, The List, The 11 O’clock Show (CH4) and Match of The Day Magazine. even though he hates football

“Piercingly funny…Fiendishly funny as dry as a dead mans bones” – The List

“Mike Gunn will make you die laughing” – The Guardian

“One of the 10 leading stand-ups in Britain” – The Independent

Fantastic standup comedy this weekend : Jeff Innocent, Dana Alexander, Gareth Richards & George Zack

We’re delighted to have Jeff Innocent back at Banana Cabaret this weekend.

Jeff Innocent is a popular and experienced stand up comedian, actor, writer and cultural commentator. As a stand up comedian he has reached near legendary status among his peers and audience alike by staying at the top of his game for over 15 years. His unique appeal lies in the contrast between his East End ‘Geezer’ appearance and demeanour, and his educated, philosophical delivery and subject matter. Inspiring the Guardian to describe him as a comedian with, ‘The body of a nightclub bouncer and the brains of a university boffin’.

He has also taken one man shows to The Edinburgh Fringe and is currently touring the UK with his new show, Comedy for Grown Ups and is presently writing a touring show for 2014 entitled Jeff Innocents Guide To Growing Old in the 21c. The spread of the comedy circuit globally has found Jeff performing in such unlikely and far flung locations as China, India, Norway and Viet Nam to name but a few.
His recent acting credits include appearances in the children’s TV programme, Little Howards Big Question and BBC’s extremely popular historical drama series, Call The Midwife.
As a writer he has contributed to a number of publications and websites such The Independent, The Ecologist and London Is Funny, on a wide range of topics including environmental issues, history and music. He also lectures on stand up comedy at The London Comedy School.

This weekend at Banana Cabaret : Adam Bloom | Stefano Paolini | Paul T Ayers | Matthew Osborn | Bob Mills

Late August ? Rainy weekend ? not much better than some side splitting comedy, and what a bill we have for you this weekend.

It’s always a pleasure to welcome back Adam Bloom, one of Britain’s most inventive comedians. He has performed sell-out solo shows at the numerous Edinburgh Festivals as well as performing a sell-out tour of Britain. In July ’13, Adam made his fifth appearance at ‘Just For Laughs’ in Montreal, including being part of 2004 ‘Just For Laughs Comedy Tour’, playing to 42,000 people in 17 cities across Canada. He has also written three series of ‘The Problem with Adam Bloom’ for BBC Radio 4.

Bob Mills joins us on Saturday, and was one of the darlings of the 90’s alt comedy circuit, bursting onto the scene with his anarchic late night TV show In Bed with Medinner on LWT. His abrasive, acerbic style is always a thrill to catch live and he continues to carve a distinct path through the comedy circuit, lauded by his peers – and rightly so.

Saturday 19 June at Banana Cabaret : Kate Lucas | Russell Hicks | Gary Little | TBC

The aircon is on, the beers are cold and the comedy is set to stun this Saturday at Banana Cabaret.

One of the most exciting comics to come out of America, Russell Hicks is branded one of the ‘Top Six Comics to Watch’ by LA’s Stand Up Talk Magazine.

He has appeared on LA based panel show Direct TV’s ‘What’s News?’ and is a regular guest on hit podcasts such as Talkin’ Sh*t with Eddie Ifft.

Headlining the nationally acclaimed student circuit in the United States, Russell regularly takes his hour long solo shows across the country to the biggest universities.

Prolific and consistently delivering quality new work, audience members are often compelled to return for two nights in a row. Fast and loose, no two shows are ever the same

Some people know exactly what to say, what to think and how to behave. They breeze through life with grace, efficiency and ease. Kate Lucas does not.

This award winning musical comedian is known for her razor sharp and deliciously dark songs. Expect examples of what not to say and how not to behave from this gloriously talented young comic.

Last year she took home the title for the prestigious Leicester Mercury New Comedian of the Year and her performances have been met with huge critical acclaim. Already storming it all across the circuit, this utterly outrageous act is a mostly definitely one to watch.

Fantastic lineup this Friday and Saturday…

Jeff Innocent is a popular and experienced stand up comedian, actor, writer and cultural commentator. As a stand up comedian he has reached near legendary status among his peers and audience alike by staying at the top of his game for over 15 years. His unique appeal lies in the contrast between his East End ‘Geezer’ appearance and demeanour, and his educated, philosophical delivery and subject matter. He has also taken one man shows to The Edinburgh Fringe and is currently touring the UK with his new show, Comedy for Grown Ups and is presently writing a touring show for 2014 entitled Jeff Innocents Guide To Growing Old in the 21c. Alun Cochrane, Simon Munnery, Dave Fulton, Josh Howie & Sean Percival: This weekend at Banana Cabaret

Comedy royalty descends on Balham this weekend with the immortal Alun Cochrane & Simon Munnery, plus Dave Fulton, Josh Howie, & Sean Percival

Alun is a no-nonsense comedian who specialises in funny nonsense, and he has recently joined Frank Skinner’s Absolute Radio Show and can be heard every Saturday morning from 8am.
Alun has several television appearances to his name, most recently Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow he’s also often seen on Eight out of Ten Cats, Mock The Week, and many others
At the Edinburgh festival he’s performed 6 original solo stand-up shows in the last 7 years to critical and audience acclaim.

Simon Munnery is a comedian’s comedian, an invetare gagsmith with a brilliant, abstract style that has earned him many plaudits (and occasional repeat booking) over the years. Also known as his characters “Alan Parker: Urban Warrior” and “The League Against Tedium”, he has pierced the mainstream both with his BBC Radio 1 show in 1997 and his BBC2 television series Attention Scum! in 2001

Munnery’s experimental style is reflected in his makeshift props. As “The League” he often wears a hat crafted from a kettle, and in one of his stand-up shows he plays character who performs with a metal bucket over his head.

‘He’s nothing less than a genius’ (Guardian).

‘There are more brilliant ideas in one of Simon Munnery’s shows than most comics will manage in a lifetime’ (Times).

Banana Cabaret this weekend - Paul Tonkinson, Lucy Porter, Greg Burns, Ben Norris and Colin Owens

We’ve got a terrific end of the Summer Holidays lineup this weekend, featuring the fantastic Paul Tonkinson, Lucy Porter, Greg Burns, Ben Norris and Colin Owens replacing Paul on the Saturday.

Paul Tonkinson is perhaps best known for his work presenting on The Big Breakfast and The Sunday Show. Winner of the 1992 Time Out New Act of the Year Award and Time Out Stand Up Comic of the Year in 1997, he is a class act, and brings his acid, hilarious take on the perils of modern life back to our stage, and invariably is a showstopper.

Lucy is a regular face and voice on TV and radio panel shows. Most recently you may have seen her emerge victorious from a well-fought battle for the title of Celebrity Mastermind Champion in a special edition of the show for Children in Need. She has also appeared on two series of ‘Mock the Week’, two series of ‘Argumental’ for the Dave Channel, ‘Have I got News for You’, ‘Clive Anderson’s Chat Room’, ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’ and ‘What the Dickens?’ On Radio 4, she is team captain on the popular ‘Act Your Age’, where she gets to work alongside such showbiz luminaries as Roy Walker and Barry Cryer, she can also be heard on ‘The Personality Test’ and ‘The Unbelievable Truth’.

Lucy also hosts the fantastic Screaming With Laughter comedy club for mothers and babies, a daytime monthly here at the Bedford…http://www.screamingwithlaughter.com

Comedy Gold this weekend - Bob Mills, Dave Fulton, Simon Clayton and very special guest Live at Banana Cabaret this weekend

We’ve got a terrific lineup this Friday and Saturday at the Banana, including Bob Mills, Dave Fulton, Simon Clayton and very special guest.

Bob Mills was one of the darlings of the 90’s alt comedy circuit, bursting onto the scene with his anarchic late night TV show In Bed with Medinner on LWT. His abrasive, acerbic style is always a thrill to catch live and he continues to carve a distinct path through the comedy circuit, lauded by his peers – and rightly so.

Dave Fulton too is a comedian’s comedian, originating from Seattle, he brings his bone dry delivery to bear on fizzing, whimsical material, and always a big drawer at the Banana Cabaret. Catch his act on TV on The Omid Djalili show among others.

Jeff Innocent, Roger Monkhouse, Noel James & Paul Thorne : Live at Banana Cabaret Sat 2nd August

We’re delighted to have Jeff Innocent back at Banana Cabaret this weekend, alongside a stellar lineup that includes Roger Monkhouse, Noel James and Paul Thorne.

Banana Cabaret 25/26th July : Curtis Walker, Brendan Dempsey, Paul Thorne, Janine French, Carey Marx, Luke Toulson & Joe Rowntree

A fantastic lineup including Curtis Walker, Brendan Dempsey, Paul Thorne and Janine French on Friday, and on Saturday the lineup features Paul Thorne, Carey Marx, Luke Toulson and Joe Rowntree.

Curtis Walker is one of black comedy’s biggest hitters. Curtis was awarded Best Male Stand-up in the Black International Comedy Awards and received the Top Carlton TV Multicultural Entertainment and Comedy Award 2001. On television, he has cohosted Paramount City, appeared on Jonathan Ross, Now What, The Lenny Henry Show and The Stand-up Show. He is also the main writer on the last two series of Channel 4’s The Richard Blackwood Show.

Carey Marx has been a circuit favourite for years, mixing his own blend of dark humour with his mischievous and gleeful delivery. His willful disregard for the controversial and delicate is tempered beautifully by his ability to find joy in the most unexpected places. This hilarious mix of edgy topics and playful gagsmithery can be seen at all the top clubs across the country.

Carey has taken shows to numerous Edinburgh Festival Fringes. His most successful festival being 2013, in which he took his new show ‘Intensive Carey’. Carey received an incredible eight 4 and 5 star reviews for his show concerning his ill health over the last year.

Saturday 5th July : Banana Cabaret presents Steve Williams, Fern Brady, Gordon Southern & Tom Toal + 25% off all food !

What a ridiculously good bill we have for you this Saturday.  Book tickets Now.

Steve Williams is a blisteringly funny Welshman, acquiring a huge reputation that has seen him smash Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Edinburgh and Beyond and he recently appeared on Dave Gorman’s Absolute Radio Show (Absolute Radio).

A writer on Russell Howard’s Good News, you really shouldn’t miss this lad on his meteoric rise.

Catch a bot of Steve on the Comedy Roadshow here :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDL3Py90R48&channel=BBC

Fern Brady is a seriously funny comedian, a former finalist on So You Think You’re Funny and Hackney Empire’s New Act of The Year. A wry, deeply original and often scabrous in her routines, Don’t miss.

Star of Channel 4’s Ricky Gervais vehicle “Derek”, Kerry has recently supported Mickey Flanagan on his “Out Out” tour, as well as performing on “Live at the Apollo”, and smashing Edinburgh in 2013 with her “Wonder Woman” show, described as “The best comic timing on the fringe” by the Sunday Times.

“Wicked, close to the bone gags and a classy poise that showed she’s no stranger to the stage. What gave her the edge, though, was her closing routine on foxes in the Daily Mail – smart, sharp and the sort of material from which she could build a whole winning show.”
The Stage

“Crackles with fire, has beautiful timing, perfectly pitched delivery and great gags to boot…has the air about her of a woman going places.”
The Scotsman

“obnoxious, rude and utterly brilliant”
ThreeWeeks

Gordon Southern is very much a comic’s comic – endless one-liners, keenly observed detail, plus an inspired ability to go off on tangents and audience interjections. A worldwide performer, Gordon’s comedy has toured the globe, sparking audience’s mirth.

“A likeable act, good company and skilled at creating a cheery atmosphere, incorporating bizarre audience interjections without missing a beat.” Chortle

“Really good and funny… His show is over far too soon for all.” **** One4Review

Finally, Tom Toal brings his uniquely irreverent and punderful spin on the world to complete a dynamite lineup of comedy gold.

“..Certainly one of the most promising of today’s emerging comics.” – Chortle

** And for this weekend only, The Bedford is offering 25% off all food if you’d like to dine before the show.***

We’re delighted to have the mighty Kevin Day back at Banana Cabaret this Saturday.

Kevin came to prominence in the British alternative comedy stand up scene of the late eighties and early nineties, hosting the comedy discussion programme Loose Talk on BBC Radio 1 from 1992 to 1994,[2] having initially co-hosted with Mark Thomas when the programme was launched in 1991.
He has co-hosted the Channel 5 sports programme Live And Dangerous with Mark Webster.
He has written for Dave Allen, Jo Brand and The 11 O’Clock Show.In 2005 Day became, and is still, a programme associate for Have I Got News For You and contributes to the writing on the programme delivered by the guest hosts each week. He had previously been a guest on the show in 1991.Since 2004 he has been a regular on Match of the Day 2

He’s also playing as part of our outstanding lineup at the Balham Comedy Festival – click here to snap up tickets : www.balhamcomedyfestival.com
He’s joined the equally brilliant Steve Gribbin, who delivers terrific, scathing comedy, often skewed to the current political climate, armed as he often is with a guitar a clutch of terrific musical comedy setpieces.

Additional support comes from the hilarious American (and competitively-priced lawyer) Al Lubel, and the marvellous Frenchman Yacine Belhousse. Truly an international comedy clash.

The Fantastic Ian Stone, Live at Banana Cabaret Sat 31st May

We’re thrilled to have the formidably talented Ian stone back at Banana Cabaret this weekend.

Ranked amongst the top ten stand-ups in Britain by The Independent, Ian Stone is one of the most talented topical acts and comperes in the country. Edgy and provocative, with an easy-going manner and self-depreciating style, Ian is at great ease bantering with an audience. He’s also a member of the Comedy Store’s critically acclaimed ‘Cutting Edge’ team. Ian also received a nomination in 2012 for the BEST SHOW at the Leicester Comedy Festival Awards.

He has performed all over the world including Comedy Festivals in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, South Africa, Holland, France, Ireland and Germany. Scurrilous one-liners from Roger Monkhouse, Live at Banana Cabaret Fri 16th/ Sat 17th May

If you haven’t seen the utterly scabrous, deeply funny comedian Roger Monkhouse, then might we suggest a visit to Banana Cabaret this weekend ?

Widely regarded by audiences across the country, Monkhouse (no relation) brings his outstanding banter to the Bedford this weekend, alongside Jo Caulfield, Geoff Boy and Will Franken oin the Friday, with Simon Bligh replacing Will Franken for the Saturday show.
“unfailingly entertaining and skilfully able to pull punchlines, seemingly, out of thin air” Chortle

“packs in more observations on the human condition in a twenty minute set than a whole lecture on Jean-Paul Sartre” Venue Magazine

“an enthusiasm akin to that of an excitable professor who’s just found the gene that would enable a python to grow a beard” Manchester Evening News

“Witnessing a Roger (no relation to the late, great but distinctly orange Bob) Monkhouse gig is a little like watching a dotty old university professor at work. Although much funnier, of course” Manchester Evening News

“Highly regarded by his peers on the circuit – he’s shaven-headed, topical, good, and nothing to do with Bob” Evening Standard
